With the most sophisticated engines and ride control available, the PIV is the greenest ferry on Massachusetts Bay, and among the most comfortable. A photo from 1980, the first year we operated the MV PROVINCETOWN II between Boston and Ptown. MacMillan Pier still had the fish processing structures at the end and the Wydah Museum was still a coffee shop and bait shop. Traffic in the form of Ford Pintos, El Caminos, and the good old VW beetle further date the picture.
LATE FALL WEEKEND FAST FERRY SCHEDULE October 25th - December 1st, 2024
By the time the following photograph was taken, in 1937, women are wearing sleeveless dresses, men are in shirt sleeves, completely gone are the parasols and half the group is without hats. Silver Line – Take the subway to South Station and transfer to the Silver Line (the Silver Line also travels through the Back Bay). The Silver Line departures are less than every five minutes to the World Trade Center stop, the location of our dock. The trip from South Station to World Trade Center takes only four minutes.
FAST FERRY SCHEDULEMay 16 - October 20, 2024

Parking – Seaport Parking Lots $27 – $36 per car per day with overnight rates costing more (sometimes more, sometimes a little less). Underground parking is available at the Seaport Hotel, directly across the street from our docks and ticket office with rates of $35 for any car parking there between 12 and 24 hours. One block inland is the the new and very large South Boston Waterfront Parking Center for slightly less money. The DOROTHY BRADFORD was operated by the Cape Cod Steamship Company from 1911 to 1937.
MINUTES FROMBOSTON TO PTOWN
The fourth ferry that we dedicated to the storied Boston to Provincetown run is the still current fast ferry PROVINCETOWN III. We launched this wonderfully quick and comfortable boat in 2004. We are so proud to be continuing this 170 year tradition of ferrying passengers between Boston and Provincetown and are honored to be the longest operating ferry company of all those that have come before us.
Directions to Boston Terminal, 200 SEAPORT BLVD
Our ships are tied up to the EAST side of that same building (the right side of the World Trade Center as you face the harbor). The Silver Line stop is less than 100 yards from our pier. To get to us from the station, please take the New Congress Street street-level exit. Proceed to the crosswalk to the right of the station’s exit doors.

This photo is taken from the breezeway just aft of the staterooms on our first ferry, M/V PROVINCETOWN. It's a marvelous depiction of Ptown in the 70s, not just for the hairstyles of our passengers, but, for the fishing activity and shoreline of Provincetown. The inbound fishing vessel is none other than the F/V Michael Anne, one of the last Eastern Rig Draggers to call on Provincetown.
CHOOSE YOUR TRIP
Check fares, departure and arrival times for both Fast Ferry and Traditional Ferry services. From 1937 to roughly 1945, Bay State Steamship Company operated the SS GOVERNOR COBB between Boston and Provincetown. This is the vessel that our very own Provincetown Ticket Office Manager, Erin Thomas Lawrence, tells us that her grandmother and grandfather met and fell in love aboard. The two met and danced together the entire trip-long. These vessels were, in large part, floating dance halls.

These very well equipped and maintained high speed ferries operate up to three round trips daily between Boston and Provincetown, May through to the first weekend in December. Bay State Cruises is proud to have provided passenger vessel service on Boston Harbor since the 1960s. We are a tightly knit group of hard working folks who care a great deal about what we do on the water and how we do it.
Our ships depart from the EAST side of the World Trade Center (the right side of the World Trade Center as you face the harbor). Total time from your airport terminal curb to our dock, once aboard the bus, is approximately 14 minutes. These are triple water jet boats, powered by three engines of 800hp each. The vessels are highly maneuverable and are operating well below their service capabilities.
In 1883, the first vessel built specifically for the Boston-Provincetown route was introduced. The LONGFELLOW, pictured here in 1890, operated until 1902. In the background is Provincetown and two of the hundreds of fishing schooners that called on Provincetown regularly during its heyday as a fishing port. We encourage those who also love to be around boats and the waterfront, have an enthusiasm for leaning into their work, and have an upbeat demeanor in general to apply for a position with us. Driving from the North – Take I-93 (central artery) South to exit 16B, the Purchase Street and South Station exit. At the top of the ramp, just outside of the tunnel exit, take a left onto Seaport Blvd.
Take a left across the crosswalk, one short block to our pier at the World Trade Center (the Seaport Hotel blocks one’s view of our vessels, just across the street from the Silver Line Station). Simply ask the taxi driver who picks you up at your terminal to take you to World Trade Center, lower level, on Seaport Blvd. Our ships depart from the EAST side (the right side as you face the harbor) of the pier.
The previous image, taken in 1911, shows ladies with hats, parasols, and long dresses. By 1937, the date of this photo, above, women are wearing sleeveless dresses, men are in shirt sleeves, completely gone are the parasols and half the group is without hats. Tickets for cruises must be picked up on the evening of the cruise from our ticket office. Roundtrip returns may be on a later day, but must be this season. Tickets are now available on the ferry and at our ticket offices.

This photo shows the "Boston Boat" (as the ferry has long been named by Provincetowners) landing at Railroad Wharf. Later reconstructed and renamed MacMIllan Pier, the Boston Boats have been landing at nearly the identical location for 170 years. The Provincetown IV is the newest fast ferry serving Cape Cod. Our Ticket Office is located in the Chamber of Commerce office on the west side of Lopes Square, just across the parking lot from MacMillan Pier and Fishermen’s Wharf.
Long Point Lighthouse is seen with the no longer existent overhead power lines. The sailboat on the shoreline is the venerable AMF Sunfish, the everyman boat of the 70s before Lasers and kayaks became all the rage. On Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer, join us on Boston Harbor to dance and party the night away with Boston's most entertaining live acts, DJs, and comedy. Our Provincetown Fast Ferry fleet has the most daily departures, are the most modern vessels, and our Boston dock is easy to get to in the Seaport District. Parking lots and garages are not owned or run by Bay State Cruises and we have no control over the rates and policies of the owners or managers of the lots and garages. We offer this price information in hopes of aiding passengers with their travel plans but have no influence over the parking businesses’ rates, policies, or the frequency with which either may change.
Our entertainment cruises are limited to Adults 21 or more years of age. All entertainment cruises begin and end at our Boston Docks. Of all the Provincetown Ferry Companies that have served Provincetown since the 1800s, Bay State Cruise Company has served the route the longest. We are proud of this commitment and dedication to the Provincetown community.
